Marcos Vidal presents two works which could be understood as a distorted mirror from each other. Both are collage series addressing the social gender roles sculpted and perpetually repeated by printed mass media as an expanded non-emancipatory political agenda. True Male (Verdaderos machos) reinterprets the frontal, power emanating pose of the portrait painting genre creating a visual comment of the absurdity of male normative codes. Parallelly, the collage piece of Women first (Las señoras primero) grows itself on a pre-existing museum’s brochure re-writing, deviating and partially hiding the original content of the document. Text-based social norms, advices and cooking receipts, alone or coupled with women bodies, irrupt and collide within the museal institutional printed space questioning how they dictate and regulate female behavior in domestic and public spaces under an idealized, repressive and binary man-controlled women representation.
